Forest School Leaders
Becca Abery
My name is Becca Abery, I am a Montessori teacher and passionate about forest school and nature-based learning .Growing up on a farm in Ireland I have always had a love of the outdoors and the freedom it has to offer. I trained as a Montessori teacher and went on to work in many different early years settings before running a small village preschool for 12 years. I trained as a forest school leader in 2015 and introduced a weekly session to the playschool. After a self-funded trip to Denmark (2019) where Forest school teaching originated from, I found myself intrigued and fascinated by their passion , enthusiasm and complete trust in this type of teaching. The children were outside most of the time and in all weather. The practices supported children of all ages, some with complex additional needs and they also used animal therapy in many of their settings. I found it so inspiring, as it was embedded in society and key to their education, learning and development .I am currently running daily forest school sessions for a local preschool, where I organise and manage toddler stay and play sessions of forest school . Additionally, I love working with different age groups of children, sharing good practice alongside a brilliant fellow forest school leader. It is so motivating watching the children flourish, learn new skills and gain confidence throughout the clubs.

Kim Swain
Hi, I am Kim Swain… I am a primary school teacher, a forest school leader and a mum to two wonderful girls. My passion for the outdoors and nature has been a part of me since I was a child. It is only now that as an adult I have come to realise how much I benefited from spending time as a child amongst nature. My practice has developed over time, beginning in 2010 as a volunteer helper at my daughter’s forest school. From there, I trained as a TA in 2013 and a Forest School Leader in 2014. I have since developed my own forest school from a blank canvas at Whaddon C of E school. My skills have been transferred to other further woodlands and schools where I have supported the set up. I am passionate about children spending time outdoors in nature, excelling at being themselves. I have witnessed the empowering benefits forest school sessions have on children through its holistic ethos: developing their confidence, resilience, self-belief, well-being, independence, motivation, and life skills amongst many others. I wish for each and every child to experience such inclusive opportunities.

Harriet
Hi name is Harriet Swain. I am 15 years old and I work at the forest friends club during school holidays. I really enjoy working at the club because I enjoy being outside amongst nature. I have a love for animals and all things living which I get to be a part of at forest friends club with chickens, dogs, insects, birds, pond life, trees, plants, vegetables and flowers. I help out by sharing my love for nature during the sessions with the children. I also quite like being a kid myself and playing the occasional game of 1-2-3 where are you.

I have been a proud part of Forest school from the age of 6 and give it full credit for my love of the outdoors, confidence, and social skills. I now get to pass this on and help support the fun and learning as an adult. I love seeing the children's confidence grow each day as they step outside their comfort zones.
